On the sacred occasion of Chhath Puja, Delhi embraces a ‘Dry Day’ on November 19th, as declared by Krishna Mohan Uppu, Commissioner of Excise. While the city pays homage to Pratihar Shashthi during the festivities, it coincides with the fervent clash between Team India and Australia in the 2023 World Cup final, led by Rohit Sharma. As the city observes this unique convergence, liquor shops will remain closed, blending cultural reverence with the excitement of the cricketing world. A day of spiritual significance and cricket anticipation awaits Delhiites on this memorable Sunday.

Chhath is an important festival in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar where people worship the Sun. This year, the four-day festival started on November 17. During the last two days, devotees fast and offer ‘arghya’ to the Sun God. In Delhi, the excise commissioner can declare dry days, like during religious festivals, but liquor vendors won’t be compensated for lost sales on these days.

This year, around 637 government-owned liquor stores shut down on March 8 (Holi), October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti), October 24 (Dussehra), and November 12 (Diwali). The Excise department’s list shows the next dry day is on Christmas (December 25). On November 19, India plays Australia in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 final.
The match will happen at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and starts at 2:00 PM IST. Australia wants to win their sixth ICC ODI World Cup, while India, who hasn’t won an international title since 2013, is hoping to secure their third ODI World Cup title after 1983 and 2011.
