After losing 2-5 to world champions Belgium in the last four rounds, India’s men’s hockey team’s ambition of winning Olympic gold after 41 years was dashed. India, on the other hand, is still chasing a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
Hockey: Belgium’s Alexander Hendrickx scored a hat-trick in the 19th, 49th, and 53rd minutes. At the same time, Loick Luypaert (2nd minute) and John-John Dohmen (60th minute) also scored to give the defending silver medalists a second consecutive appearance in the Olympic final.
Javelin thrower: Annu Rani of India finished 14th out of 15 in Group A qualification with the best throw of 54.04 meters in the women’s javelin throw event. Her personal best was 63.24 meters, but she was unable to progress further.
Wrestling: In wrestling, India began its campaign at the Makuhari Messe Hall in Chiba, with Sonam Malik falling in the round of 16 of the women’s 62kg freestyle category to Mongolia’s Bolortuya Khurelkhuu.
Shot put: Tajinder Pal Toor (men’s shot put qualifier) will also compete. Toor won the Asian Championships in Doha in 2019 and the Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018. The 26-year-old from Moga, Punjab, broke a new national record of 21.49 meters two months ago at the Indian Grand Prix in Patiala, securing a ticket in Tokyo.
