Know the success story of Mirabai Chanu’s victory

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu is an Indian weightlifter who was born on August 8, 1994. In Tokyo Olympics 2020, Mirabai Channu won a silver medal for India in a 49 kg weightlifting event. Mirabai Chanu has been a frequent competitor in big tournaments since 2014, winning the World Championships and numerous gold at the Commonwealth Games. Since she represented India and won a silver medal, the Indian Government awarded her the Padma Shri award.

 

After Karnam Malleswaari, who won the Bronze in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Mirabai Chanu is the second to bring a silver medal for India. She was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 2018 by the Indian Government.

Winning a silver medal for India, Mirabai Chanu put an end to India’s 21-year drought for a weightlifting medal in Olympics. Lifting the total weight of 202 kg( 87+115kg), Mirabai Chanu, who is 26-year old, defeated Karnam Makkeswari, who won the Bronze medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics weightlifting. Thus, she was able to banish the demons of the 2016 Olympics when she had failed to register a single valid clean and jerk lift. Lifting 210kg, HouZhihui from China won a gold medal. Windy Cantika Aisah won the Bronze, who is from Indonesia, lifting 194kg.

After her victory, Mirabai Chanu said, “Since the entire country was watching, I was a bit nervous but wanted to get a medal for India by giving my best.” Adding to her words, she says, “I am happy to bring the medal for India on the first day of the Olympics.” On the question to her like what does winning mean to her as a Manipuri, she says, “I belong to the entire country and not just to Manipur.”

 

In 2016 Rio de Janeiro, she was not qualified for the Olympics. In the first two snatch lifts, she couldn’t make up, but on the third try, she, however, did her best. I learned what I needed to know and where I needed to grow, and I’m here due to my failure in Rio. I was depressed, but now we’re here, “she stated

Mirabai surpassed the previous Olympic record in the event by lifting a total of 202 kg. In the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Karnam Malleswari won a bronze for India in the weightlifting event. On July 24, President Ram NathKovind congratulated MirabaiChanu on her silver medal triumph in weightlifting at the Tokyo Olympics.

 

Mr. Kovind tweeted, “Heartiest congrats to MirabaiChanu for opening India’s medal tally in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 by earning silver in weightlifting.”

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the weightlifter’s victory, saying India was “elated by Chanu’s amazing achievement.”
